Children with disorders of the digestive system, gastrointestinal tract, liver, etc are treated by paediatric gastroenterologists. Some of the procedures and treatments available include:

● Diagnostic Endoscopy: Endoscope, which is a flexible tube fitted with a light and a camera on one end is used to confirm a diagnosis by examining the internal organs via mouth or anus.
● Upper Gastrointestinal Tract (GI) Endoscopy or Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD): This procedure is used to diagnose problems in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) including oesophagus, stomach and the duodenum (small intestine). An endoscope is passed via the mouth and throat and video images of the GIT are captured.
● Colonoscopy: This procedure is used to diagnose problems in the colon (large intestine) and rectum. An endoscope is passed via the rectum and video images of the entire colon are captured.
● Enteroscopy: This procedure is used to diagnose problems in the small intestine (small bowel). An endoscope with a balloon attached to one end is passed via the mouth and video images of the entire gastrointestinal tract are captured. The balloons are inflated to get a closed view of the organs.
● Capsule Endoscopy: This procedure involves swallowing a tiny capsule that contains a tiny wireless camera — which captures the video images of the digestive tract.
● Esophageal Manometry: A catheter containing pressure sensors is passed via the nose into the stomach. This procedure involves measuring the contractions, force and coordination of esophageal muscles as the food is pushed into the stomach.
● Therapeutic Endoscopy: An endoscope is used to treat conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
● Endoscopic variceal banding: An elastic ring similar to a rubber band is used to cut off blood flow through an enlarged vein. This procedure is effective in treating variceal bleeding with fewer complications.
● Sclerotherapy: A medicine is injected into the blood vessels or lymph vessels to shrink the malfunction.
● Stricture Dilation: Widening of a narrow bowel segment is treated using dilation devices such as balloons that are inflated with water or air, or rubber bougies.
● Foreign Body Removal: Foreign substances such as food, toys, small batteries, etc from the ear, nose, and throat are removed with fewer complications. For example:
● Tweezers, forceps, magnets, suction machines, etc are used to remove the foreign object from the ear and nose.
● Sometimes the water is used to flush out the object from the ear.
● When the object is blocking the airway surgery is recommended to save the life of the child.
● Polypectomy: This procedure is used to remove polyps that are non-cancerous or benign using upper endoscopy, lower endoscopy or colonoscopy.
● Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG): The procedure involves providing food, fluids, medicine, etc. safely into the stomach in patients with difficulty in swallowing. An endoscope is used to place a PEG tube or a feeding tube inside the stomach via the mouth.
● Ascitic Tap or Ascitic Drain: The procedure allows draining of infected fluid trapped inside the body, mostly the abdomen using a catheter.
● Liver Biopsy: Liver biopsy is a painless procedure recommended when a child has a large liver. A needle is inserted via the skin into the liver to collect liver tissue samples which are used to diagnose liver conditions.
● Ultrasound-guided Biopsy: Tissue samples are collected from the liver using ultrasound images or pictures.
● Liver Abscess - Drainage: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage is a minimally invasive procedure for a fluid collection that is accessible.
